Awami League rejects Oikyafront’s proposal

The ruling Awami League has rejected a proposal of Jatiya Oikyafront to form a neutral polls-time government to host the 11th parliamentary polls. The government can be shaped like a caretaker government. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader disclosed this while briefing reporters after holding the second phase of dialogue with political opposition Jatiya Oikyafront at Ganabhaban on Wednesday afternoon. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not violate constitution in holding the general elections. There is no scope to go beyond the constitution. We’ve conveyed that clearly,” he said. Oikyafront leaders headed by Dr Kamal Hossain placed the proposal in a written format, during their second phase of dialogue with the Awami League led alliance. Responding to the Oikyafront proposal, Awami League leaders said their proposal was unconstitutional. The dialogue started around 11.00am and ended around 2.00pm. Oikyafront delegation members include Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee Members Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain and Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal JSD President ASM Abdur Rab, General Secretary Abdul Malek Ratan, Gonoforum General Secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu, Executive President Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Advisor SM Akram, Jatiya Oikya Prokriya leader and former VP Sultan Mohammand Mansur. On the other hand, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led delegation of Awamil League. Other AL members were -AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Anisul Haque, Dipu Moni and S M Rezaul Karim. Besides, Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu joined the dialogue. The first dialogue between Awami League and Oikyafront was held on November 1. Oikyafront, a new political alliance, was formed on October 13.
