A mezban programmme has been arranged for 80,000 people on the occasion of qulkhawani of the late former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor and President of City Awami League ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury to be held tomorrow (Monday). The mezban has been arranged at 12 places in the port city, including his Chashma Hill residence in Sholoshahar area on the day. The other venues for mezban include The King of Chittagong in Panchlaish area, K Square Community Centre at GEC intersection, Kisholoy Community Centre at Chawkbazar, Swiss Park Community Centre in Pancchlaish R/A, Swaronika Community Centre at Love Lane, N Mohammad Convention Hall in Muradpur area, KB Convention Hall at Bakalia, BIP Banquet Community Centre and Sagarika Square at Kazir Dewry and Golden Touch Community Centre in Double Mooring area. Besides, mezban for people of Hindu Community, Buddhist, Christian and other religions has been arranged at Rima Convention Centre in Jamal Khan area and mezban at Chashma Hill residence only for women, said family sources. Mohiuddin Chowdhury passed away early Friday at Max Hospital here.
The mayoral by-elections of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held in last week of February. Acting Secretary of Election Commission (EC) Helal Uddin Ahmed said this to journalists on Sunday noon after a meeting. Elections in 18 new wards of DNCC and DSCC each and several reserved seats will be held on the day. The meeting started around 11:00am at the Election Bhaban in the capital. It may be mentioned that the DNCC mayoral post was declared vacant on November 30 after its mayor Annisul Huq passed away. According to the rules, EC is bound to hold the by-elections within 28 February.
Flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport resumed [url=deshismash.com]Sunday[/url] morning as visibility improved. A total of three flights arrived at the airport around 10:30am. The first namaz-e-janaza of Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque was held around 10.10am on Sunday at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Muhammed Sayedul Hoque died while undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Saturday morning. He was 75. His body was taken to South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from BSMMU mortuary. President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Md Fazley Rabbi Mia, placed wreaths on the coffin of Sayedul Hoque. Later, the President, deputy speaker, ministers, lawmakers, senior leaders of Awami League and other political parties, well-wishers, officials and employees of the JS attended his namaz-e-janaza. He will be buried at his family graveyard at Purbobhagh village of the upazila following another namaz-e-janaza after Zohr prayers, said Public Relations Officer of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Shah Alam Badshah. He leaves behind a wife and son. His son, Raihanul Hoque, is a lecturer at Dhaka Medical College. Hoque was elected to the Brahmanbaria-1 seat five times as a member of the Awami League. The veteran AL leader was appointed to the cabinet under the Sheikh Hasina administration in 2014. Sayedul Hoque was born on Mar 4, 1942 in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar.
[b] [/b]Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq said that only the President has the right to appoint new Chief Justice. The Minister made the opinion while replying to a question at his secretariat office on Monday noon. He said, "I can say that only the President has the right to appoint Chief Justice according to the Bangladesh constitution. As a president, he does two tasks- he appoints Prime Minister and Chief Justice." "This is his (President) duty. Only he can say when he will do it (appointment of new Chief Justice)," Anisul Huq said. In reply to another question, he said that the Law will run its course. Nobody is above the law.
Ismat Ara Sadek, State Minister for public administration ministry said that some 3.60 lakh posts remain vacant in different ministries and other government agencies in the country. The state minister made the disclosure on behalf of Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam at the National Parliament on Monday. "Now the number of total vacant posts in different ministries, divisions and departments is 359,261 in the country," she said. Necessary steps have been taken to fill the vacant posts. Recruiting people to the vacant posts is a continuous process, Ismat Ara Sadek added.
The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the government as to why the decision of fixing 13 year-old for minimum age of a freedom fighter should not be declared illegal. Alongside, the court also stayed the effectiveness of the gazette notification issued for the writ petitioner Khandoker Shahidul Islam alias Shahidullah. Besides, the effectiveness of the sepate letters have also been stayed for six months. The bench of Justice Kazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah came up with the order and rule on Tuesday. Advocate AKM Fazlul Karim and Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain moved for the writ petitioner in the court. After 45 years of independence, the government has finalised the definition of freedom fighter, fixing 13 as the minimum age for being recognised as a freedom fighter. Setting nine conditions for eligibility, a gazette notification was published on November 10 last year with the consent of President Abdul Hamid. The government has finalised the definition on the basis of recommendations of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council to prepare an acceptable list of the freedom fighters. According to the gazette, people who were 13 on March 26 in 1971 would be deemed eligible to apply for the status. As per the definition, people who took part in the Liberation War in response to the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman between March 26 and December 16 in 1971 will be recognised as freedom fighters.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said that the government has been failing to send back Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar. The BNP chairperson also urged Myanmar to take back Rohingyas to their country in the shortest possible time. Khaleda Zia said this while distributing relief at a Rohingya camp in Ukhia on Monday noon. She reached Ukhia around 12.45pm. Earlier around 11.00am, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia started her journey from ***’s Bazar Circuit House to visit Rohingya camps in Ukhia upazila and distribute relief materials among the Myanmar's displaced nationals. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia arrived in ***’s Bazar from Chittagong on Sunday night.
Two students of Dhaka University (DU) have temporarily been expelled for their alleged involvement in the admission test fraudulence. The University authority took the decision in syndicate meeting on Sunday night. DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman confirmed the news. The expelled students were identified as Mohiuddin Rana, student of Physics Department of the session 2011-12, and Abdullah Mamun of Applied Chemistry Department of the session 2014-15. Of them, Rana, identifying him as one of the key frauds of the group, was taken in remand in a case by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Rana was assistant secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central committee. Later, he was suspended from the post after the allegation. He was arrested with devices used in the fraudulence of the admission test from his own room of Shahidullah Hall of the university.
At least nine people were killed and 20 others were injured in separate road mishaps at Madhabdi and Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi on Monday morning. Md Ilias, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Madhabdi Police Station, said a head-on collision was happened between a passenger bus and a microbus near Kandail bus stand area in the morning, leaving four dead on the spot and 17 others injured. The injured were immediately rushed to a local hospital where two more succumbed. The deceased could not be identified immediately, he added. Meanwhile three people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and human hauler, popularly known as Leguna, at Kararchar village of Shibpur upazila in the morning. The deceased could not be known immediately. Md Hafizur Rahman, Inspector of Itakhola Highway Police of Narsingdi, confirmed the news.
A Dhaka court sentenced 11 people with 20 years of imprisonment for attempting to kill present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 1989. However, the court acquitted one of the accused as no charges were found against him. Judge of the Additional Metropolitan Session’s Court Md Zahidul Kabir passed the verdict on Sunday. The court also fined all of the convicts Tk 20,000 each in default of which they will serve six-month more in jail. The convicts are- Lt Col (retd) Khandakar Abdur Rashid (fugitive), Zafar Ahmed alias Manik (fugitive), Humayun Kabir alias Humayun (fugitive), Golam Sarwar alias Mamun, Sohel alias Freedom Sohel Joj Miah, Shahjahan Balu, Nazmul Maksud alias Murad, Mizanur Rahman, Khandokar Amirul Islam alias Kajal and Gazi Imam Hossain. Earlier on October 16, the Judge Zahidul Kabir fixed October 29 for delivering the verdict. On August 10, 1989, the convicts launched an attack on Sheikh Hasina at her residence in Dhanmondi's Road 32. Later, Zahurul Islam, a security guard of the residence, filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station.
Water transports from Barisal to all other parts of the country including Dhaka have been suspended due to bad weather. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) came up with the announcement on 5:00pm on Saturday. Azmal Huda Mithu, deputy director of Naval Safety and Traffic Division in Barisal, confirmed the news. He said all kinds of water transports will remain suspended till further notice due to bad weather. Meanwhile just after announcement, all passengers boarded on Adventure-1, Parabat-10 and 12, Suravi-7, Kitankhola-1, the launches anchored at Barisal ghat, were bared to journey to their destination.
